I am a do-it-yourself backyard landscape enthusiast. In fact, one reason I got a new house was because I needed a yard that I can style and where I can apply my landscaping know-how. Since I was young, I have been reading and collecting different landscape design tips and ideas but have never really gotten around to implementing them. Actually, even as a child, I have this grand vision of what my property will be like and how my backyard garden will be designed. But my ideals and dreams were not always translated into reality. My garden wasn’t that bad, but it wasn’t what I envisioned it to be. As a young child, my dream was to have a huge garden and in the center of that garden is the best playground a child could ever have. I wanted a giant garden fountain that one could swim in or a garden hockey court – I hope you get the concept.
Since then, I have experimented with different garden layouts and landscape designs. My skills and preferences have evolved, and my love for landscaping has grown immensely. My current obsession is growing my own plants in the garden. I love the process of creating and designing. I enjoy the outdoors. And I just know that spending time outside the house has lots of benefits. Doing backyard landscaping allows me to do all these and the takeaway is I get to create a beautiful world outside my house.
Though I haven’t really finalized my garden design yet, I’m getting there. I am having progress. I have downloaded some landscape design applications that can help me plan, layout and design the various elements of my backyard garden. I have laid out the flagstones for the pathway, and in a few days, I am going to start planting. I am getting better and starting to feel confident that I can do this on my own. I’m not completely abandoning the idea of hiring professionals to do some of the more difficult and complicated designs but I want to do as much work as I can. Hiring landscape professionals could make my work easier and get this project done much faster, but I enjoy doing this and I want develop my skills and become a better landscaper.
If you’re thinking of getting your hands dirty and doing your own backyard landscape design, I encourage you to do it. Don’t be intimidated by how difficult it is, just do it. You can plan and breakdown the project into smaller goals to make them easier to do and more manageable. Once you’re over that fear of starting and you get the hang of it, you will find that it’s actually not as difficult as you thought it would be. Just think: this will be a good practice and you will develop your landscaping skills and in the end, you will be rewarded with a beautiful backyard that you can be proud of because you did it all by yourself.
